Bourbon Barrel Beans

Bourbon Barrel Beans

Beans don't need to be boring. These sweet Bourbon Barrel beans are filled with our barrel-aged whiskey BBQ sauce, a straight shot of real bourbon and chopped bacon. The perfect boozy backyard BBQ side.

Note: This recipe can be sped up by using canned pinto and northern beans and reducing the simmer time to 1-2 hours on low.

Bourbon Barrel Beans

Difficulty: Easy
Prep time: 8-12 hours
Cook time: 7 hours
Serves: 6

Ingredients:

8 oz.

Pinto Beans, dried

8 oz.

Northern Beans, dried
1 quart Chicken Stock
1 1/2 quarts Water, divided
1 1/2 cups Bourbon Barrel - Whiskey BBQ
White Onion
1/2 cup Bacon Bits (optional)
2 T  Bourbon (options)

Instructions:

  1. Day 1:

    1. Place beans in a large 2 quart measuring cup, or large mixing bowl.  Cover with water and refrigerate overnight.

    Day 2:

    1. Drain beans and place them in a cast iron Dutch oven or large pot with a lid.  Add chicken stock, 1 cup of water, Bourbon Barrel, and onion.  Stir well.

    2. Place the pot over high heat and bring mixture to a boil.  Set the lid on top, leaving a ½ inch gap to see the beans.  Lower heat to low and simmer for 5 to 7 hours, stirring occasionally.  Keep adding additional water 1 cup at a time, as the beans will slowly soak up the liquid and the sauce, yet need ample time to cook tender.

    3. Once beans are tender, remove pot from heat, and stir in bacon and Bourbon, if desired.  Serve warm.
