How to Replace the RTD Probe in the Pro Max and Pro Classic Home Smokers
While extremely rate, if you're not getting temperature readings or inconsitent results, it might be time for a new RTD Probe for your Pro Smoker Max 100 S or Classic 100 S smoker. Below is a video tutorial to help you. You'll need a replacement RTD Probe for this installation.
Step by Step Instructions
- Unplug your smoker, remove shelves, screens, and pans; make sure the smoker is fully cooled
- Cut the caulk around the inside exhaust from the internal smoker body
- Remove the screws from the top of the exhaust pipe and carefully pry the exhaust pipe using a flathead screwdriver (a piece of cloth can help you avoid scratching the smoker)
- Use a screwdriver to twist the exhaust pipe loose
- Remove the 4 screws around the controller, remove the face plate, and pull out the controller
- Find and remove the probe wires from the controller, and place it back into the hole created by the missing controller for now
- Remove 9 screws to remove the top of the smoker
- Cut the ends off the old probe, remove the bracket and unscrew the old RTD probe from the wall of the smoker, and carefully cut and remove caulk to expose the exit hole
- Cut the probe end off and pull out some of the internal wire
- If your new probe comes with the connectors, clip them off before proceeding
- Generously wrap the ends of the old and new probes with electrical tape
- From the back of the smoker, manipulate the old probe wire up and down to loosen the pathway, pull the old wire up and out until the new probe is drawn through
- Unwrap the tape and throw away the old probe wire
- Fasten the new probe to the smoker, install the 2 new connectors on the exposed wire of the new probe and pinch with pliers
- Replace the top of the smoker, recaulk and replace the exhaust pipe; apply new caulk around the bottom of the exhaust pipe as well
- Seal the wire exit hole, replace the protective bracket, and connect the new probe to the controller terminals marked "grill probes"
- Reinstall the controller and trim, test and recalibrate your equipment
