Are Seasonings and Rubs the Same?
Dry rubs contain larger pieces of herbs and spices, and in addition to flavoring food, can provide a crust for the food. Where you may season food lightly, rubs are added much more generously to truly coat the food. Rubs are better suited to barbecuing where seasonings are for grilling.
What Are Meat Rubs?
Meat rubs are a combination of flavors and seasonings that create a delicious crust once cooked or smoked. A good meat rub will be a mixture of salty and sweet, combining perfectly into a delicious flavor.
Dry Rubs vs Wet Rubs
Both dry and wet rubs contain seasonings and herbs; but wet rubs have a liquid component. This could be beer, vinegar, or oil. Wet rubs have the added bonus of sticking to the food better. Wet rubs create more of a marinade and won’t give you that crispy crust that dry rubs will.
Do You Rub Seasoning Into Meat?
If you’re adding seasoning, no. Seasoning can be sprinkled on top of the meat. Rubs however are rubbed into the meat. After generously applying your rub, massage it into the meat. Be sure to cover every surface. For a thicker coat of seasoning, spices can be pressed into the meat.
Can You Use Rubs on Ground Meat?
Many rubs go great on ground beef to make tasty and crispy burgers. It’s all about finding the right flavors and combinations. As a general rule of thumb, you want to add 2 tablespoons of rub for each pound of meat.
